Hyundai Mobis will build an electric vehicle battery plant next to the Hyundai auto assembly plant in Montgomery, a $205 million facility that will eventually employ at least 400 people.
Gov. Kay Ivey, Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed and other officials joined representatives of Hyundai Mobis and Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama to make the announcement at the Capitol today.
“Alabama’s auto manufacturing sector is evolving rapidly to capitalize on the EV revolution that is sweeping the industry, and this new Hyundai Mobis battery plant represents another milestone in that transition,” Ivey said in a news release. “We’re excited about the company’s new investment and what it represents for the next chapter of automaking in Alabama.”
The 450,000-square-foot facility will supply more than 200,000 EV batteries annually to the HMMA plant in Montgomery and the Kia plant in Georgia.
Hyundai Mobis is not new to Alabama. The company supplies complete cockpit modules, front and rear chassis modules, bumper assemblies, and instrument panels for HMMA and Kia Georgia. It has operated a factory on 83 acres in Montgomery since 2002 and is the largest Tier 1 supplier for HMMA and Kia Georgia, according to a press release.
H.S. Oh, vice president of the electric powertrain business for Hyundai Mobis, said the new plant in Montgomery is an important step in the company’s plans to expand production internationally.
Construction of the plant is expected to start as early as December. Production is projected to start in 2024.
Hyundai announced plans earlier this year to produce electric vehicles at its Montgomery plant. The company said the $300 million investment would create 200 jobs. The plant will make the all-electric Genesis GV70 luxury SUV and a hybrid electric version of the Santa Fe SUV.
Mercedes-Benz opened its electric vehicle battery factory in Bibb County in March. The batteries will power the the EQS SUV and EQE SUV that Mercedes-Benz will produce at its plant in Vance.
